Free PDF Tools
PDF files are the defacto standard used to distribute files over the internet. They ensure that the document is delivered perfectly, that the document cannot be edited or changed, and that the document will print perfectly - just like it was originally designed. For the end user needing to read or print the PDF document, a free plug in is required for Windows users, but Apple users can create and view PDF files right out of the box.
When placing links to your PDF files on your website, it is good etiquette to include a link to the free Adobe Acrobat Reader like this:
FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader Required.
Any document that is intended for viewing or printing (that about covers it, huh?) can be transformed into a PDF file. Adobe used has a bit of a monopolistic strangle-hold on this software with their Acrobat Pro software ($299-$699). This is extremely nice software, but it is intended for serious business use and is major overkill for the more modest user just looking to put PDF files online or email them to a few people.
While there are quite a few Software vendors selling their PDF conversion software at a price, there are two software products that I want to cover here that are completely FREE: CutePDF and PDF Creator. Both of these products work in a similar way - they install a new print driver and you simply “print” the file on the new “printer”. This new printer doesn’t print ink on paper that you can hold in your hand, it prints your document as a PDF file that you can view on your computer, provide for download on your website or email to a friend. Both are great programs and totally free, so take your pick.
