Facebook Fan Page Design – Part 3: Photos

ANOTHER PIC IN THE WALL
iPhoto announced TODAY (October 20th) that iPhoto 11 has new integration with Facebook. If your friends leave comments on your photos, you’ll see them in iPhoto. iPhoto even shows you all of your Facebook photo albums, including the ones you published using another application. You’ll always know which photos you shared (or didn’t share) on Facebook, because iPhoto keeps track of that for you.
Facebook is currently on a tear to loosen its restrictions and gain some good faith with its users. There are other photo services and software that allow you to post to your wall – even iPhone apps. My only advice is: FIND ONE AND USE IT. I, personally, use the iPhone Facebook App, as well as Posterous.com to pass pictures to my wall. Posterous even has a new iPhone app that allows you to automatically broadcast all your pics, tweets, even videos to ALL your social media services. But I digress … More >

Fan Boyhood
I have to admit at the debut of this blog that I am an Apple Fan Boy. But, it may help to explain my history with the forbidden fruit tattooed tech company. I was first introduced to computers when my father first brought home a Radio Shack TRS-80 with a whopping 4K of memory. Then, in college I got my first geek job in a Macintosh Lab in the Business School at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona. At the time, Macs were squatty, beige boxes with green screens… but I was hooked. Even though my experience with and knowledge of Apple Computers pre-dates the Genius Bar, I think I can give fair assessment of the good, bad and the ugly of the Kingdom of Jobs. More >
Social Media in the Church
Apr 13th
I just taught a 2-hour workshop on “Social Media and the Church” at William Jessup University in Rocklin, CA. About 30 pastors and workers showed up to learn, contribute and discuss. I fear that THEY taught me more than I taught THEM.
Key Learnings about the use of Social Media in Churches:
- Most churches are cautious, but consistent. The group I surveyed cited face to face relationships as a higher priority than new technology. They need to be convinced it makes sense and serves a real purpose.
- There really is an age gap - the younger the pastor, the more likely they are to use social media. No surprise, but it did seem somewhat polarized in the room.
- Connecting people scares churches – especially if it is happening outside the safe walls of the church website.
- Driving traffic to the church Website is a welcome byproduct. Driving people to the curated, walled garden of the church website may be social media’s saving grace for churches.
- The Website will remain the flagship of tech in the local church…. but social media will help enrich – not replace – the experience.
Stay tuned, there will be more posts on the content of the Social Media workshop coming soon.
